How did the public feel about the government in the industrial period?
People stopped resisting them and realised that they should be responsible for certain things.

1723.
What was the bloody code?
Over 200 offences punishable by death.
In what year did most of the offences under the bloody code not be punishable by death?
The 1820’s and 1830’s.
What was the only thing remaining on the bloody code list by 1830?
Murder and treason.
Why did public executions help end the bloody code?
Because the government were afraid of a revolution. They were afraid large crowds would feel sympathetic toward the criminal.
Why did the jury help end the bloody code?
Because jury’s were refusing to find people guilty because punishments were seen as being too harsh. THIS HAPPENED WITH THE PUBLIC TOO.
Why were people afraid of transportation?
They were afraid of the unknown.
Why was transportation effective?
Juries no longer felt reluctant because they saw it as less harsh.
In regard to transportation, what happened if you committed further crimes?
Sent to more remote settlements with harsher treatment.

1833

36 ships and 6,779 prisoners.
When did transportation end and why?
1857 because Australians began protesting.
