The importance of chlorine Flashcards
Compounds can be ________ using electricity?
Decomposed
What is the process called when a compound is decomposed using electricity?
Electrolysis
Does electrolysis only work with a d.c. current or an a.c. current?
d.c.
Do batteries produce d.c. currents or a.c. currents?
D.c.
What is produced when hydrochloric acid is electrolysed? and where?
Hydrogen gas and chlorine gas. At an electrode.
What salt does sea water contain a lot of?
Sodium chloride
How can chlorine gas be obtained from sea water?
Electrolysis
What cleaning chemical is chlorine used to make?
Bleach
What is chlorine used to make? (2)
Bleach and plastic
What does PVC stand for? (type of plastic)
Poly(chloroethene)
Why is chlorine gas dangerous?
It is toxic
Why is chlorine a useful disinfectant?
It kills microorganisms
What does a toxic hazard symbol look like?
A skull and cross bones
Explain the precautions you should take if you are carrying out electrolysis of hydrochloric acid in the school lab.
The laboratory must be well ventilated, by keeping the doors open and some windows open. Take care not to sniff the gases produced.
These precautions are needed because the electrolysis of hydrochloric acid produces chlorine. Chlorine is a toxic gas, so it will harm you if you breathe it in.
