Hold a glowing splint in the mouth of the test tube ( light the splint then blow it out so that it is just glowing) and if the gas is oxygen then the splint will relight and burst into flames again

Hold a piece of damp blue litmus paper in the mouth of the test tube and if the gas is chlorine then the paper will turn red then turn white

A student tests a gas by holding a pecs of damp blue litmus paper in it for a few second. The paper turns red. Student X says that this proves that the gas is chlorine. Student Y says the gas may be chlorine. Explain who is correct

Student y is correct because chlorine is not the only gas which turns blue litmus paper red.
