What did ostpolitik aim to do?
Normalise relationships between east and west germany

It was feared that people in the GDR would become more accustomed to higher living standards and that they would ignore the political ideology in favour of the Western ideology

Abgrenzung, policy of demarcation where the differences between both states were emphasised in favour of the SED.

The GDR-Soviet Friendship Treaty of 1975 which emphasised the GDR’s closer ties with the USSR
What did Ostpolitik echo?
The detente that was being experienced by the USSR and USA during the late 1960s
What did the GDR benefit from, from Ostpolitik?
Financial aid from FRG, increased trade with the FRG and increased international recognition from the abandonment of the Hallstein Doctrine

That he was leader of the Socialist Democratic Party giving him good negotiating power with the GDR

It enabled for future relations to have a solid foundation to be built upon. It showed that both nations could keep their identities without fear that either of them would lose them. It’s success is shown through increased travel between FRG and GDR throughout 1970s
