The Hydrological Cycle Flashcards
Is the hydrological cycle a closed system?
Yes
There is no inputs or outputs
What are the 3 different parts of the hydrological cycle?
The sea, the land and the atmosphere.
What is percolation?
When water moves vertically down through soil and rock.
What is channel flow?
Flow of water in a river
Where is water flow also stored?
On the land
What is evaporation?
When water is heated by the sun and turns into water vapour
What is transpiration?
The evaporation of water from plants
Describe evapotranspiration?
Both evaporation and transpiration happening together
What is the first stage of the hydrological cycle?
The water evaporates from the sea and the land
What is stage 2 of the hydrological cycle?
The water vapour is moved inland by winds
What is stage 3 of the hydrological cycle?
The water vapour condenses to form clouds and falls over the land as precipitation
What is stage 4 of the hydrological cycle?
Water moves from one place to another
What is stage 5 of the hydrological cycle?
Water is held on the land
What is infiltration?
When water soaks into the soil
What is through flow?
When the water in the soil flows downhill
What is groundwater flow?
When the water in rock flows downhill
What is surface runoff?
When water flows overground
What is channel storage?
When water is held in a river
Describe groundwater storage?
When water is stored underground in soil and rock.
What is a rock called when it stores water?
Aquifer
What is interception storage?
When water lands on things like plant leaves and doesn’t hit the ground
Describe surface storage?
When water is held in things like lakes, reservoirs and puddles
What is the final stage of the hydrological cycle?
The water ends up in the sea, where it evaporates and goes around the cycle again
