Erosional And Depositional River Landforms Flashcards
What happens when a river floods onto the flood plain?
The water slows down and deposits the eroded material that it’s transporting
What is a flood plain?
The wide valley floor on either side of a river which occasionally gets flooded
What are levees?
Natural embankments along the edges of a river channel
What happens if the sea doesn’t wash away the material from a river?
It builds up and the channel gets blocked. This forces the channel to split up into lots of smaller rivers called distributaries
What is a delta?
When material builds up so much that low-lying areas of land are formed
What are the three different types of delta?
Arcuate (rounded shape)
Cuspate (triangular shape)
Birds foot (shaped like a birds foot!)
