The human respiratory system Flashcards
where does the respiratory system take place?
thorax
step one of breathing -
when we breathe in, air enters in through the nose and mouth
step two of breathing -
air travels down the trachea to the lungs, tiny hairs (cilia) help to remove dirt and micro-organisms
step three of breathing -
air enters the lungs through the bronchi with branch and divide to form a network of bronchioles
step four of breathing -
at the end of the bronchioles are air sacks, with bulges on them called alveoli which are covered in tiny blood capillaries and this is where oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged between the blood and the air in the lungs - called gas exchange
step one of inhalation -
diaphragm contracts and flattens
step two of inhalation -
external intercostal muscles contract, ribs move upwards and outwards
step three of inhalation -
causes the volume of the thorax to increase
step four of inhalation -
this causes the air pressure in the thorax to decrease
step five of inhalation -
this draws air into the lungs
step one of exhalation -
diaphragm relaxes, returns to its dome shape when it is pushed up by the liver and stomach meaning that it pushes up on the layer
step two of exhalation -
external intercostal muscles relax allowing the ribs to drop back and also presses on the lungs
step three of exhalation -
causes the volume of the thorax to decrease
step four of exhalation -
cause the air pressure in the thorax to increase
step five of exhalation -
this causes air to be pushed out of the lungs
