the human nervous system Flashcards
how does the nervous system help up us?
by helping us react to surroundings and coordinate our behavior
what is the nervous system made up of?
CNS, sensory neurons, motor neurons, effectors
how is information passed along the nervous system
information from receptors pass along neurons as electrical impulses to the CNS
what is the CNS (Central nervous system)
the brain and spinal chord
what does the CNS do?
coordinates responses of effectors which can be muscles contracting or glands secreting hormones
in what order is information passed on in the nervous system?
stimulus < receptor < coordinator < effector < response
what are reflex reactions?
they are automatic and rapid responses which do not involve the conscious part of the brain
what happens when a stimulus is detected by receptors
impulses are sent along a sensory neuron to a relay neuron in the CNS
where do the neurons in reflex arcs go through
the spinal chord or an unconscious part of the brain
what happens when an impulse reaches a synapse between the sensory and relay neuron
they trigger chemicals to be released and these chemicals cause impulses to be sent along the relay neuron
what happens when the impulses reach a synapse between a relay and motor neuron
chemicals are released and cause impulses to be sent along the motor neuron this time
where do the impulses travel?
along the motor neuron and to the effector
