The Human Body Through Images Flashcards
What are the 2 attributes of a wave?
Wavelength and frequency
What is the relationship between wavelength and energy ?
Wavelength and energy are inversely proportional.
Longer wavelength = lower energy
Shorter wavelength = greater energy
The high energy of gamma rays allow them to…?
Penetrate through solid matter and cause serious damage to macromolecules of life
What is the relationship between wavelength and frequency?
They are inversely proportional.
Shorter wavelength = higher frequency
Longer wavelength = lower frequency
How are X-rays produced?
Decelerating high velocity electrons
In an X-ray tube, what is the source of electrons?
Cathode which is heated by a filament
In an X-ray tube, what does the anode do?
Because it has a positive voltage, it attracts electrons so that they reach a high velocity.
How are conventional x-ray images taken?
By passing rays through body and exposing a photographic film
In x-ray imaging, what areas appear dark?
Those that were exposed by x-rays
In x-ray images viewed with a fluorescent screen (fluoroscopy), how do the images look?
Exposed areas - bright
Unexposed areas - dark
Is fluoroscopy safe?
No b/c it exposes patients to much higher doses of x-radiation = hazardous
