The Human Animal Flashcards
What are the 3 domains of life?
Domain Bacteria, Domain Archaea, and Domain Eukarya
Cerebrum
The largest portion of the brain, which controls voluntary thought and action. It is where intelligence and learning take place.
Cerebellum
A structure of the brain that is important for coordination and motor control. It is found at the base of the brain.
Brain Stem
A portion of the base of the brain that controls many involuntary body functions such as breathing and heart rate and some reflexes.
What is the relationship between cerebrum size when compared the the rest of the brain and intelligence
The larger the cerebrum in relation to the rest of the brain, the more intelligence
What is meant by cultural adaptation?
Ability to develop behaviors and technologies that permit humans to cope with new situations.
EXAMPLE: to minimize effects of really hot environments we developed fans and air conditioning.
Evidence
Information that can be used to support a conclusion; in science, this information had been generated in accordance with scientific practices and methods
Inference
Conclusions that follow logically from some form of direct evidence
The coil on the stove top is red. EVIDENCE or INFERENCE?
Evidence
The water on the stove is boiling, therefore the stove must be hot. INFERENCE or EVIDENCE?
Inference
The iceman was carrying a bow and arrows. INFERENCE or EVIDENCE?
Evidence
The ice man must have been a hunter because he was carrying a bow and arrows. EVIDENCE or INFERENCE?
Inference
Innate behavior
Actions organisms take that are NOT learned, such as instincts. The “come natural”
EXAMPLE: coughing when something obstructs your throat
Learned behavior
The response an organism develops as a result of specific actions with the environment.
EXAMPLE: Skills you practice to become better at.
Why is a long childhood a good thing for humans?
It allows us time to learn. It allow us time to develop good language and communication skills. In essence our brains develop for a long period of time and have a higher capacity to learn (large cerebrum) more than any other animal.
