What was the Act of Union?
It was a law that united Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England into one sate called the United Kingdom/Britain.

In 1800
How many Irish people supported the act of Union?
About 1/4
Who were the Nationalists?
A political group who believed Ireland should be independent of Britain. They were mostly Catholics.
Name the two types of nationalists.
Moderate nationalists and rebublicans.
Who were republicans?
Republicans supported the Irish Republican brotherhood, who felt home rule alone would not give Ireland enough freedom. They believed this could only be achieved though armed rebellion.
Give three reasons why nationalists opposed the Union with Britain.
Poverty was increased and there had been a famine in 1845 to 1849. Most Irish people believed Ireland would be more prosperous without its Union with Britain.
Most nationalists were Catholic, and were Discriminated against as most people in UK were Protestant. Before 1829 Catholics couldn’t sit in parliament.
A feeling of National Identity made people want a government of their own.
Who were the Unionists?
Unionists were people who supported the Act of Union and wanted Ireland to stay being part of UK. Most were from Ulster due to the success of the Ulster plantation.
Give three reasons why the Unionists supported the Union with Britain.
Industries like linen factories and shipbuilding were very prosperous in ulster areas and unionists felt that their own prosperity would decline if Ireland left the UK.
Most unionists were Protestants and were happy being part of a mostly Protestant state. Many believed that “Home rule would be Rome rule.”
Who were moderate nationalists?
Moderate nationalist supported the Home rule party, which wanted home rule by granting Ireland it’s own parliament. This independence was to be achieved by peaceful means only.
