Status Quo
(step 1)
describes the hero’s situation or life at the beginning of a heroic quest
Call to Adventure
(step 2)
The hero is faced with an event, conflict, problem, or challenge that makes them begin their adventure
Assistance
(step 3)
a guide or protector or some form of magical helper—often a seasoned traveler—who offer the Hero training, knowledge, confidence, advice, and such that will help the Hero on his journey
Departure
(step 4)
the hero or protagonist receives a call to go on an adventure
Trials
(step 5)
when the hero faces challenges that improve their skills, meets and befriends strangers who join the hero’s journey, and encounters characters who aim to destroy them
Approach
(step 6)
The initial plan to take on the central conflict begins, but setbacks occur that cause the hero to try a new approach or adopt new ideas
Crisis
(step 7)
a divide in the hero’s journey
Treasure
(step 8)
hero eventually reaches the central crisis of his adventure, where he overcomes the main obstacle or enemy, undergoing “apotheosis” and gaining his reward
Result/ Return
(step 9/10)
Hero has been resurrected, purified and has earned the right to be accepted back into the Ordinary World. The true Hero returns with a story to share with others or heal a wounded land.
New Life
(step 11)
final stage of the Hero’s journey in which he returns home to his Ordinary World a changed man. He will have grown as a person, learned many things, faced many terrible dangers and even death but now looks forward to the start of a new life
Resolution
(step 12)
When a story reaches resolution, conflicts are resolved in some way (for better or worse) and loose ends are tied up sufficiently.
