The heart (arteries, veins, red blood cells, platelets) Flashcards
1
Q
Plasma
A
transports dissolved chemicals and proteins around the body
2
Q
platelets
A
help blood to clot at the site of a wound
3
Q
whats the arterys role
A
to carry high pressure blood away from the heart
3
Q
the veins role
A
carrys lower pressure blood towards the heart
4
Q
the capillarys job
A
they are involved in the exchange of substances with cells and tissues
5
Q
properties of Artery
A
- strong elastic walls
- the walls are thick compared to the lumen (the size of the hole in the middle)
- contain thick layers of muscle to make them strong, elastic fibres allow them to stretch and spring back
6
Q
properties of capillaries
A
- really tiny
- really narrow, can squeeze into gaps between cells (means they can carry blood really close to every cell in body to exchange substances with them
-permemable walls, so substances can diffuse in and out
-supplies food and oxygen, takes away waste like Carbon dioxide - walls are one cell thick, increases rate of diffusion by decreasing the distance over which it occurs
