The Heart and Fetal Circulation Flashcards
How many chambers does the heart have ?
4
Name the 4 chambers of the heart
2x atria
2x ventricles
What do the ventricles do?
They pump blood out of the heart
What do the atria do?
The atria collect the blood
What is the job of the valves?
The valves purpose is to prevent blood from flowing backwards
What is the job of the septum?
Separates the two sides of the heart
What does the right side of the heart do?
It pumps de-oxygenated blood to the lungs to pick up oxygen
The left side of the heart pumps…
Oxygenated blood from the lungs around the rest of the body
Name the three types of blood vessel
Arteries
Capillaries
Veins
Where do arteries carry blood?
Away from the heart
Name 3 factors about arteries
- have thick muscular walls
- carry oxygenated blood away from the heart
- contain blood under high pressure
- has small passageways for blood
Where do veins carry blood?
Towards the heart (always de-oxygenated)
Which is the artery that doesn’t carry oxygenated blood? And why?
Pulmonary artery and because it’s come from the lungs and the oxygen has been expelled there
Which is the vein that doesn’t carry de-oxygenated blood?
Pulmonary vein - it carries oxygenated blood and goes from the lungs to the heart
Name 4 factors of veins
- Carries blood to the heart
- Has thin walls
- Has larger internal lumen
- Contains blood under low pressure
- Has valves to prevent blood flowing backwards
