The Heart and blood Flashcards
What are the four sections of the heart?
Left atrium, Right atrium, Left ventricle, Right ventricle
Two types of valves in the heart
Atrioventricular and Semilunar valves
Function of the Semilunar valves?
Separates ventricles from arteries they pump blood into
Function of Atrioventricular valves?
Separates the atria and ventricles
Functions of valves in the heart?
Ensures directional flow of blood in the heart
What side of the heart has a thicker ventricular wall and why?
The left, due to it having to pump blood a much longer distance
What separates the two sides of the heart?
The septum
What parts of the heart does blood flow INTO?
The atria
What are the three main functions of the cardiovascular system?
Transport of Oxygen, Co2 and nutrients, regulating body temperature and clotting of open wounds
What is the liquid part of blood?
Plasma
What parts of the blood are responsible for clotting?
Platelets
What changes occurs in platelets before clotting
Fibrinogen to Fibrin
What makes up Most of blood?
RBCs
Ratio of RBC to WBC
600-800:1
Two kinds of WBC
Phagocytes and Lymphocytes
