Blood vessels Flashcards
What are the three kinds of blood vessels
Arteries, Veins and capillaries
What are arteries?
blood vessels carrying blood away from the heart
What do veins do?
Carry blood to heart
Which 2 vessels carry a different kind of blood from the rest of their type?
Pulmonary vein and artery
Function of Capillaries
Allows diffusion of gases and nutrients into body cells from bloodstream
Which kind of vessel has the thickest walls and why?
arteries, due to needing to withstand blood flowing at high pressure
Veins have valves, why?
To prevent backflow of blood
Why do arteries have more elastic fibres?
Because that allows them to recoil back to their original size after each surge of blood
Largest artery?
Aorta
Largest vein
Inferior vena cava
