The Heart Flashcards
What heart structures prevent back flow of blood?
The four valves. Their function is to keep blood flowing in one direction by preventing back flow.
What valve does blood pass through from the right atrium to the right ventricle?
The right atrioventricular valve, also known as the tricuspid valve, is located between the right atrium and right ventricle.
What valve does blood pass through from the left atrium to the left ventricle?
Left atrioventricular valve, also known as the bicuspid valve, is located between the left atrium and left ventricle
What valve does blood pass through from the right ventricle to the pulmonary trunk?
The pulmonary semilunar valve is located between the right ventricle and the pulmonary trunk.
What valve does blood pass through from the left ventricle to the aorta?
The aortic semilunar valve is located between the left ventricle and the aorta.
What are the three layers of the heart wall?
The heart wall has 3 layers:
● Epicardium: It’s the innermost serous membrane, the visceral pericardium. It is composed mainly of loose connective tissue.
● Myocardium: It is the heart muscle itself, composed of cardiac muscle cells. It is the thickest layer of the heart wall.
● Endocardium: It is the smooth epithelium (simple squamous) that lines the inner surface of the heart chambers. It’s in contact with the blood.
