The Heart Flashcards
Describe a double circulatory system.
The heart is made up of two circuits.
The right ventricle pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs, whilst the left ventricle pumps oxygenated blood to the rest of the body.
Describe the process of blood flow around the body.
Deoxygenated blood -> Vena Cava -> Right Atrium -> Left Atrium -> Pulmonary Artery -> Lungs
Oxygenated blood -> Pulmonary Vein - Left Atrium -> Left Ventricle -> Aorta -> Rest of the body
What is the pacemaker and where is it located?
The pacemaker is a group of cells in the right atrium that stimulate the heart muscle to contract by producing small electrical impulses.
What is the function of the coronary arteries?
The coronary arteries branch of the aorta and supply the heart muscle with oxygenated blood for cellular respiration.
