The Heart Flashcards
why do mammals have a double circulatory system?
one circuit pumps blood to the lungs to become oxygenated, white the other transports the oxygenated blood to the rest of the body
what are the four chambers of the heart?
right atrium, right ventricle, left atrium, left ventricle
what side of the heart is oxygenated?
the left side
what is a valve?
valves prevent backflow of blood
what valve is present on the left side of the heart?
bicuspid valve
what valve is present on the right side of the heart?
tricuspid valve
what ventricle has a thicker wall and why?
left ventricle because the left side of the heart has to pump the blood to the lungs AND the blood
what vein brings deoxygenated blood into the heart?
vena cava
what artery takes the blood from the heart to the lungs to gain oxygen?
pulmonary artery
what vein brings back oxygenated blood to the heart?
pulmonary artery
how to calculate cardiac output
heart rate * stroke volume
units of heart rate
bpm
units of stroke volume
cm cubed
units for cardiac output
cm cubed min -1
stroke volume
the volume of blood pumped by one ventricle each time it contracts
