Respiration Flashcards
what is respiration?
a chemical reaction that releases energy from glucose
is respiration an exothermic or endothermic reaction?
exothermic - some energy is transferred to the surroundings
aerobic respiration
a type of respiration that requires oxygen
formula for aerobic respiration
glucose + oxygen –> carbon dioxide + water
anaerobic respiration
a type of respiration that occurs in the absence of oxygen
formula for anaerobic respiration (humans)
glucose –> lactic acid
what is the effect of lactic acid on the body?
when it is in excess, it causes painful muscle cramps
formula for anaerobic respiration (fermentation)
glucose –> ethanol + carbon dioxide
what piece of equipment do we use to investigate respiration?
respirometer
why is soda lime added to the test tubes?
it absorbs the carbon dioxide that the woodlice produce when they respire
what is the function of cotton wool?
it makes a barrier between the woodlice and the soda lime, also allows airflow
why are glass beads added to the other test tube?
it makes it a control and allows us to make a comparison
