The heart Flashcards
Why are valves important?
They prevent backflow
Why is the heart considered a double circulatory system?
It is called a double circulatory system because blood passes through the heart twice per circuit.
What are veins?
Blood vessels that carry deoxygenated blood towards the heart.
What are arteries?
Blood vessels that carry oxygenated blood away from the heart.
What are capillaries?
Microscopic, one cell-thick vessels that connect arteries and veins.
What are blood vessels that provide oxygen to the heart muscle?
The coronary arteries
Where are the pacemakers found in the heart?
The right atrium
Name the vessels and chambers in order of which blood passes through in the heart.
Vena cava, right atrium, valve, right ventricle, pulmonary artery, pulmonary vein, left atrium, valve, left ventricle and aorta.
Name the components that makeup blood.
White blood cells, red blood cells, platelets, plasma.
What are red blood cells?
Cells containing a red pigment (haemoglobin) which has an affinity with oxygen and carry it to the muscles and tissues around the body.
What are white blood cells?
Cells that form part of the body’s defence mechanisms.
What are platelets?
They are made up of fragments of cells, they help blood clot.
What is plasma?
Yellow liquid, which makes up most of the blood; transports blood cells and urea
