sternocleidomastoideus
The sternocleidomastoid muscle has several important functions:
- Head Rotation: When one sternocleidomastoid muscle contracts, it rotates the head to the opposite side. For example, if the right sternocleidomastoid contracts, it turns the head to the left.
- Head Flexion: When both sternocleidomastoid muscles contract together, they flex the neck, bringing the chin towards the chest.
- Head Lateral Flexion: Contraction of one sternocleidomastoid muscle can also flex the neck laterally (to the same side).
- Respiration: Although not its primary function, the sternocleidomastoid can assist in respiration by elevating the sternum and clavicle during forceful inhalation.
In summary: The sternocleidomastoid muscle plays a crucial role in head and neck movement, as well as assisting in breathing.
