Conventions of dystopia
Recognisable to the reader as a nightmarish version of their own world.
Propaganda used to control citizens of society.
Independent thought and freedom is restricted.
The leader is worshipped by the citizens of the society.
The leaders of the state claim that this is a perfect society.
People live deprived lives and are in a constant state of fear.
Homodiegetic narrator
Story told from the point of view of a character in the story. Don’t understand others thoughts and feelings.
Retrospective narration
Occurs when Offred remembers what has happened in the past.
Modified first person narration
The section of the story where Moira describes what happens after she escaped from the Red Centre. The story is told by the first person narrator but by another character.
Modality
Modality is the type of behavior, expression or way of life that belongs to a particular person or group of people
