The Haber Process Flashcards
What happens when the temperature of the haber process is lowered?
The equilibrium favours the exothermic reaction (forwards), meaning that there is a higher yield.
The rate of reaction is slower
What happens when the pressure of the haber process is increased?
The equilibrium favours the forward direction as it creates less molecules. There is a higher yield and rate of reaction but a risk of explosion and it is expensive to maintain
How is the ammonia removed in the haber process?
As it is a reversible reaction there is a mix of products and reactants.
The mixture is brought to a lower temperature to liquify it, ammonia becomes a liquid first so is tapped out.
The hydrogen and nitrogen are re used in the process.
Why is the nitrogen and hydrogen used in the haber process re-used?
To reduce waste of raw materials
To eventually produce 100% yield
