Carboxylic Acids Flashcards
What is the chemical formula for methanol can acid?
HCOOH
What is the chemical formula for ethanoic acid?
CH3COOH
What is the chemical formula for propanoic acid?
C2H5COOH
How ionising are the carboxylic acids?
They are weakly ionising, meaning that in aqueous they ionise and create H+.
However they create less H+ ions than another acid of the same concentration meaning that for the same concentration they have a higher pH
How is vinegar made?
Ethanoic acid can be made by oxidising ethanol, either using yeast or oxidising agents.
The ethanoic acid is then dissolved in water to make vinegar
Why is ethanoic acid not usually chosen as a solvent despite its virtue?
It makes the solution acidic
What is an industrial use of long chain carboxylic acids?
Soaps and detergents
How do carboxylic acids react with carbonates?
They produce carbon dioxide and an -anoate salt
What is the functional group for carboxylic acids?
-COOH
