this poem is a
audacious relish of the physical knowledge the thrill of connection between, sex death and life.
opening stanza is dramatic shocking even a line has been crossed
a home associated with safety and family and whet enters the home is a potential threat ‘the gun’ a means of taking life
the atmosphere of violence is sustained throughout the poem through the sound of then poem and the structure and lines
its as if the guns explosive potential is embedded in the sound the poem makes
enjambment used to pull focus on
‘the gun’ and ‘a rabbit shot clean through the head’ ‘your hands reek of gun oil and entrails’ this way the lines break the human and animal encounter
the poem also breaks contemporary taboo around hunting and valuing the natural world as well as gender roles
the women cooks what the man brings home after hunting
pagan beliefs about the
appearance of the king of death.
