during T.S Elliot’s early years he was fascinated by the modernist approach to poetry and took quiet an interest in Italian literature, depicting 19th century life and how it was like to live in a world that was gradually advancing which led to many people fearing of urbanization and morality and the anxieties that came with humanity.
insecure and insecurity can be replaced with dissapointed/ disappointment, alienated/ alienation, isolated/ isolation, fragmented/ fragmentation.
the modernist era was fraught with change, welcome or otherwise. in the midst of war, industrialization, and rapid scientific advances, it was only natural that this chaos should be reflected in the art produced. many people felt insecure about their place in this new world the two poems… are symbolic of this insecurity

modernist poems were not averse to dark themes in their work. in a time filled with turmoil, it is not surprising that themes of death and destruction were common in all modernist art forms. the fear of death was a powerful one, and not just on an individual level. people were beginning to fear the end of the world as they knew it, as everything changed around them into something completely unrecognizable. two poems in particular …. portray this theme most effectively
