- He had the support of the common army, they were loyal to him
- Wallace supported king John and the Comyn family were happy to allow him to rule
- If king John returned to Scotland then things would return to normal
- As long as he didn’t make any move for the throne they were ok with him being guardian

- Wallace sent several letters during his role as guardian
- One letter was to German trading communities emphasising that Scotland was open for business
- It proclaims the freedom of Scots and Wallace’s position being subservient to King John
