The growing environment Flashcards
At what temperature does winter freeze occur?`
Below -20ºC
Budburst is stimulate at what temperature?
10ºC or over
What temperature is ideal for even flowering?
17ºC or over
What is the realistic level of sunshine that a vine needs to photosynthesise?
At least 1/3rd full sunshine.
What are some effects of direct sunlight on grapes? (4)
- Reduction of Methoxypyrazines
- Acid Levels fall
- Anthocyanin development increases in black grapes
- Promotes tannin polymerisation in black grapes
What effect does the earths curvature have on sunlight?
Areas closer to the equator receive more solar radiation, which is also less diffused, as the light has to travel through less atmosphere to reach the ground.
What effect does the earths curvature have on the growing season?
Regions at higher latitudes have longer days in the summer (ie the growing season) increasing the amount of sun exposure and therefore photosynthesis.
