7
Q

when lithium, sodium and potassium react with water they float on the surface, why does this happen?

A

because their density is less than the density of water

8
Q

why do alkali metals have similar properties?

A

because when they react their atoms need to lose one electron to form full outer shells

10
Q

why is sodium more reactive than lithium?

A

lithium loses its outer electron from its second shell. Sodium loses its outer electron form its third shell. The third shell is further away from the attractive pulling force of the nucleus. This means that the electron from sodium is more easily lost than the electron from lithium

16
Q

explain what occurs in a flame test?

A
  • a flame wire is moisturised with dilute hydrochloric acid
  • the flame test wire is dipped into the solid chemical
  • the wire is put in a blue bunson burner flame
  • the colours of the fames are recorded
17
Q

what is the colour of the flame if lithium is used?

A

red

18
Q

what is the colour of the flame if sodium is used?

A

yellow

19
Q

what is the colour of the flame if potassium is used?

A

lilac
