ionic bonding Flashcards
what is an ion?
a charged atom or groups of electrons
what is a stable electronic shell?
an complete electron shell
what are metal atoms?
an atom that has too many electrons
what are non-metal atoms?
an atom that has too few electrons
what happens if an atom gains electrons?
it will be more negatively charged than positively
what do we use to describe ionic bonding?
the dot and cross model
what is the chemical name for salt?
sodium chloride
describe some of the physical properties of sodium chloride?
it has a high melting point
why does sodium chloride have a high melting point?
because the ions form giant lattice structures that need a lot of energy to break down
when does sodium chloride conduct electricity?
when it is dissolved in water or when it is melted
why cant electricity pass through when sodium chloride is a solid?
because the ions are not able to move
name some of the physical properties of sodium chloride and magnesium oxide?
strong attractions between posotive and negative ions
ions cannot move in the solid (cannot conduct electricity)
ions however can move in solution (can conduct electricity)
what is ionic bonding?
transferring electrons
