The Great War ⚔️ Flashcards
What is NATIONALISM?
Nationalism means being a strong supporter of the rights and interests of ones country
What is IMPERIALISM?
Imperialism is when a country takes over new lands or countries and makes them subject to their rule
What is MILITARISM?
This means that the army and military forces are given a high profile by the government
What is an ALLIANCE?
An alliance is an agreement made between two or more countries to give each other help if it is needed i.e. When an alliance is signed, those countries become known as allies
In what two ways did NATIONALISM cause WW1?
> It made the people of countries like Britain, Germany and
France become more bellicose (warlike).
It made the races ruled by Turkey (such as the Romanians and
Bulgarians) and by Austria-Hungary (such as the Serbs)want to be
free to rule themselves.
What was the name of the gang who killed the archduke?
The Black Hand
Who was the leader of the gang and how old was he?
Gavrilo Princip was the leader of the Black Hand. He was 19 years old
When did Archduke Franz Ferdinand visit Sarajevo and why?
He visited with his wife on the 28th of June 1914.
He hoped that his public appearance would dampen the nationalistic feel in Bosnia. He wanted to publicise that he was a reformer
Who provided the weapons for the Black Hand gang?
Colonel Appi
How high was the security for the Archduke’s visit?
He insisted no army to be around the city, on police men. He also went around in an open top car (which would later prove to be a big mistake)!
What twist of fate during the Archduke’s visit changed the course of history?
Gavrilo Princip had just eaten a sandwich, when suddenly the Archduke’s car drove down that very street. The driver had taken a wrong turn. Gavrilo saw this as his chance, and both the Archduke and his wife were shot dead
Why was the war fought in trenches?
> They provided some shelter
It was easier to fire weapons without
being blown backwards or hit by the enemies
The aim was to capture the enemy’s trenches
What food was eaten by the soldiers in the trenches?
Bread, cheese and tins of corned beef were most common. They were rationed, but sometimes they got a whole tin for themselves. As extra rations they also received stew or pots of jam; plum, apple, strawberry and apricot. Sometimes even Marmelade
What were the dangers posed on the British by the enemies?
The Germans used gas a lot, which was very dangerous indeed. Another danger was machine guns. The Germans had a lot of them and mowed them down when they came over to their trenches
What vermin were in the trenches at this time?
Life were a very big problem in the trenches. Life like warm, dirty conditions and that’s what there was. The men had to change all of their clothes in attempts to get rid of them. They had baths too, but none of this made much difference. They also used to pop them between their finger and thumb while they were in the trenches, to pass the time and to just get rid of them
Another problem was rats. Some were even as big as cars. They would scurry around and became very tame around the soldiers. They even took food off them. The soldiers would put a pole across the trench and when one ran across it, they would punch it dead
