Q

Theme of Money and Wealth

A

This theme is particularly exemplified through Gatsby, and even though he has all the money in the world, he still hasn’t got what he wants- Daisy. Also, this theme is shown through the character of Tom Buchanan, and how he doesn’t use his money for the correct reasons (to help others), instead he just spends it for pleasure. And also that money doesn’t buy happiness, in Tom’s case, instead anger and arrogance.

Symbolism 1- Green Light

A

The ‘green light’ on Daisy’s dock symbolises the Gatsby’s own personal dreams, and his motivation and drive that there is a light at the end of the tunnel- to find Daisy, and fall in love with her again. Links to Gatsby replicating the American Dream, and that there is hope and opportunity.

Context

A

In a time of depression and separation and the rich and poor classes of society, Fitzgerald wanted to explore the time after these depressing events (war etc) with the roaring 20s, boom, new jazz era and free flowing alcohol. However, he does show the lack of care and sympathy for the lower class characters (Myrtle and George Wilson), through the protagonist (Gatsby) and antagonist (Tom Buchanan).

Q

Context 2

A

This separation was the norm for society and the rich characters just live their lives to the fullest, without even a through of the lower class people. This is what society in the 20s was like, and the lack of care and effort to help the people in need just wasn’t there. However, Nick seems to be the most understanding of the value of money, as he’s not exactly poor, but doesn’t have anywhere near as much money as Gatsby, Tom or Daisy.
