Explain Gatsby as the “American dream”.
Throughout the novel, Fitzgerald makes Gatsby the symbol for the “American dream”. The idea of Gatsby having it all and being what everyone else wants to be starts with his childhood. It’s the concept of the poor child becoming a self-made man. As he becomes a man, he is still poor. The janitorial job shows that he is sensitive to sophistication and elegance. It also proves how important class is to him. From chapter 1 to chapter 9, he is constantly trying to perfect himself. When we learn more about Gatsby’s past, we find out that he changed his name from James Gatz to Jay Gatsby- this is all because of how bad he wants to reinvent and perfect himself to meet the right class he has aspired to be since a young boy.
