The gluteal region Flashcards
What is the fascia lata?
Deep fascia of the thigh
-encloses the thigh muscles
What is the iliotibial tract?
Thickening of the fascia lata on the lateral aspect of the thigh
- from iliac crest
- to lateral tibial condyle
What are the superficial muscles of the gluteal region? (4)
- Gluteus maximus
- Gluteus medius
- Gluteus minimus
- Tensor fascia lata
What is the arterial supply for the gluteal muscles?
Superior and inferior gluteal arteries
Tensor Fascia Lata
O: Anterior superior iliac spin
I: Iliotibial tract
I: Superior gluteal nerve
A: Stabilise hip in extension
Gluteus Maximus
O: Gluteal surface (posterior) of the ilium, sacrum and coccyx
I: Iliotibial tract and gluteal tuberosity of femur
I: Inferior gluteal nerve
A: Extends the thigh (assists with lateral rotation)
Gluteus Medius
O: Gluteal surface of the ilium
I: Lateral surface of greater trochancter
I: Superior gluteal nerve
A: Abducts and medially rotates the lower limbs
Gluteus Minimus
O: Gluteal surface of Ilium
