The Gluteal Region Flashcards
What are the 3 major gluteal muscles?
gluteus maximus, medius, minimus
what is the innervation, blood supply and action of gluteus maximus?
inferior gluteal nerve, inferior gluteal artery and extensor of the the thigh on the trunk
what is the innervation, blood supply and action of gluteus medius?
superior gluteal nerve, superior gluteal artery and abduct thigh from the trunk and stabilize the pelvis
what is the innervation, blood supply and action of gluteus minimus?
superior gluteal nerve, superior gluteal artery, and abduct thigh from the trunk and stabilize the pelvis
describe the trendelenberg sign.
the necessity to throw your weight over the planted foor during gait
what accounts for the appearance of the trendelenburg sign?
the gluteus medius/minimus are not contracting to stabilize the pelvis in a horizontal plan with one foot off the ground
list the short lateral rotators of the thigh in order from superior to inferior
piriformis, gemmelus superior, obturator internus (tendon), gemmelus inferior, quadratus femoris
what is the nerve supply of the lateral rotators? their blood supply?
All the short rotators of the thigh are innervated by the sacral plexus
Which two structures from the pelvis pass medially to the sciatic nerve to supply the perineum?
The internal pudendal artery and pudendal nerve
What are the root values (cord levels) that comprise the sciatic nerve?
L4-S3
What may cause injury to the sciatic nerve?
Fractured hip or IM injection below the safe area of the gluteal region
