After the execution of Charles I, England had no king. What was England ruled as?
England was ruled as a republic. At first, Parliament ruled the country, but were soon replaced by Oliver Cromwell, who was given a special title: Lord Protector.

In what year did England get a king again and what was this event called?
In 1660 Parliament asked Charles Stuart to return as king. This was known as the restoration.
What were the years between 1641 and 1660 declared as?
An interregnum
What happened to the bodies of Cromwell and John Bradshaw?
They were dug up, hung in chains, beheaded, with their heads then placed on spikes outside the Houses of Parliament.
What was Charles II nickname?
He was known as the Merry Monarch

Who did the throne go to after Charles II and why?
Charles had no heirs even though he had many illegitimate children, therefore the throne passed to his brother James II. Though the new king was Catholic!
Why were many people willing to accept James II as king even though he was catholic?
Because he had two daughters- Mary and Ann who were Protestant.
Who was James’s II eldest daughter married to?
James’s eldest daughter Mary was married to William of Orange.
In what year did James introduce the Declaration of Indulgence and what was it?
In 1687, the declaration granted freedom of religion in England by suspending laws that penalised catholics.
What happened when some English lords wrote to William of Orange and invited him to invade and become King?
He arrived in England and many of James’s generals quickly switched sides, and James fled without putting up a fight!
Why was it a bad move when James fled to London?
It was a fatal mistake, as day-by-day, even more of his soldiers and officers defected to William; James’s own daughter and his best general, John Churchill both switched sides!
When did James II die?
He died in 1701 in exile.
