The Global Air Ciruclation Diagram Flashcards
How is the Hadley cell formed?
By the rising of air at the equator and the subsidence of air at 30 north and South
How are the tropical easterly winds formed
By air that moves towards the equator
How are westerly winds formed?
By air that moves towards the polar regions
How are planetary winds created?
By air diverging from the subtropical high pressure
How are the polar easterlies created?
Air that diverges on the earth’s surface from the high pressure at the polar regions
What does the convergence of air at 60 N and S result in?
Rising air which creates sub-polar low pressure
Where are mid-latitude cyclones formed?
At the polar front
What would happen if the ITCZ did not shift?
The equatorial regions would be 14 degrees hotter and the poles would be 20 degrees colder and rain would occur only in the regions beneath the ITCZ
