Global Air Circulation Flashcards
What is a pressure belt?
Large part of the earth where predominantly high or low atmospheric pressure occurs
How many main pressure belts are there in the world?
4
What is the equatorial low pressure belt also known as
Doldrums
What are the subtropical high pressure belts also called
Horse latitudes
What is a cell
Three dimensional mass of air that extends up into the atmosphere
List the three cells
Hadley , Ferrell and polar
What is the Ferrell cell also referred to as ?
The mid-latitude cell
List the three planetary winds
Tropical easterlies , westerlies , polar easterlies
What are the tropical easterlies also known as ?
Trade winds
What is the function of planetary winds ?
They are responsible for the distribution of heat from areas of heat surplus to areas of heat defecit
How would you know on a map that it is summer in the Southern Hemisphere
ITCZ and thermal equator are south of the equator and the subtropical high pressure is further south
How would you know that it’s winter in the Southern Hemisphere?
Subtropical high pressure is over land, ITCZ and thermal equator are north of the equator. ITCZ pulls the high pressure belt with it
Which pressure belts are referred to as thermal pressures?
Polar high pressure and the equatorial low pressure
Which pressure belts are referred to as dynamic pressures
Sub-tropical high pressure and sub polar low pressure
Which wind carries tropical cyclones ?
Tropical easterlies
