The genitourinary system - The female reproductive system Flashcards
Describe the structure of the female reproductive system
- Uterus, uterine tubes that run laterally to the Ovaries
- The ovarian artery and veins run over the lateral walls
- We also have the pouch of Douglas (rectouterine tube) – a layer of pertinemeum, a posterior fold
- Anteriorly is the visa uterine pouch
- We can also see the vagina, the cervix with the posterior and anterior fornix.
What does the broad ligament attach?
Attaches the lateral margin of pelvic organs to the lateral wall of the pelvis
What does the anterior surface of the uterus rest upon?
What is it separated by?
The superior surface of the bladder?
Vesicouterine pouch
What is the deepest part of the peritoneal cavity?
Rectouterine pouch
Describe the arterial and venous supply of the drainage of the uterus
What are the two arteries?
Where do they run and what do they supply?
Arterial supply:
The ovarian artery arises from the anterior surface of the abdominal aorta just inferior to the origin of the renal arteries and runs inferiorly deep to the parietal peritoneum through the broad ligament before reaching the ovary. This supplies the ovary and the ipsilateral uterine tube
The uterine artery arises fro, the internal iliac artery. Thi lies anterior and superior to the ureter within the broad ligament
Venous supply:
The right ovarian vein drains directly into the inferior vena cava while the one on the left drains into the renal vein
