The generator effect (triple only) Flashcards
Define the term potential difference
Energy transferred per unit charge (when current flows around a circuit)
Describe two ways in which potential difference can be induced in a conductor
Conductor moving relative to a magnetic field, Magnetic field around the conductor changing
Describe the generator effect
The movement of a conductor in a magnetic field causes a potential difference to be induced which causes a current to flow, also known as electromagnetic induction
Describe how the direction of an induced p.d. or current can be reversed
Reverse the movement of the conductor or the magnet, Reverse the polarity of the magnet
State the factors that affect the size of the induced p.d. or current in a conductor
Speed of the movement, Strength of the magnetic field, the number of turns in the coil
Describe how a microphone uses the generator effect to make an electrical signal from sound waves
Sound wave -> oscillating air particles -> Coil moves back and forth in magnetic field -> Causes p.d. to be induced -> causes current
What type of current is involved with both microphones and loudspeakers?
AC
