the furthest distances i've travelled Flashcards
In the first few stanzas the rhyme is…
Inconsistent and unclear
As the poem progresses the rhyme scheme gains clarity. In the last stanza what sort of rhyme is shown?
AABB
What is the significances of having an unclear rhyme scheme that gains clarity as the poem goes on?
It represents the freedom experienced by the narrator when discussing her travels and then a strict introduction to the patterns of everyday life being imposed - mirrored by the rhyme scheme being free then strict.
What is the importance of the final two stanzas having consistently longer lines than the rest of the poem?
Indicates a transition and development in the narrators thoughts.
‘anony/mity’ is enjambed over two lines to force a rhyme with the word ‘destiny’ in the following line. What is significant about the forced rhyme here?
The forced rhyme may allude the perception that her ‘destiny’ is also forced - she may be forcing herself to do this travelling to ‘find herself’ or find her ‘destiny’
What is the irony in the line ‘it came clear as over a tannoy’?
A tannoy does not tend to be clear therefore neither is her destiny.
