The fundamental ideas in Chemistry Flashcards
Define “element”
A substance made up of only one type of atom.
“Molecule”
Two or more atoms covalently bonded together.
“Compound”
Two or more different types of atom chemically bonded together
“Ion”
An atom or group of atoms that has gained or lost electrons.
“Covalent bond”
The strong bond formed by sharing a pair of electrons.
“Ionic bond”
The strong electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions.
“Metallic bond”
The strong electrostatic attraction between a lattice of positive metal ions and a sea of delocalised electrons.
“Giant structure”
Billions of atoms or ions bonded together
“Simple molecular structure”
Molecules made up of a small number of atoms covalently bonded together with weaker intermolecular forces between them.
