The function of the endocrine system Flashcards
The endocrine system
Network of glands throughout the body that manufacture and secrete chemical messengers (hormones)
Helps to regulate the activity of cells and organs in the body
Endocrine glands
Special group of cells in the ES who produce and secrete hormones (chemical messengers)
Timing of hormone release is vital as too much or too little of the hormone at the wrong time can lead to a dysunction of bodily systems
Hormones
Chemical messengers
Travel through the bloodstream to target sites in the body and affects target cells.
Target cells respond to the particular hormone as they have receptors for that hormone
The pituitary gland explanation
The ‘master gland’
= primary function is to influence the release of hormones from other glands
Controlled by the hypothalamus- which recieves info ab basic functions of body and helps regulate body
Two main parts: anterior(front) pituitary and posterior(back) pituitary
Hormones produced by pituitary gland
Anterior pituitary: LH and FSH
These hormones effect:
females: stimulates overies to produce oestrogen and progesterone
males: stimulate testes to produce testosterone and sperm
Ovaries
produce oestrogen and progesterone
Progestorone= important in the post-ovulation phase of menstrual cycle, and assoc w heightened sensitivity to social cues that indicate the presence of social opportunity or threat that would be significant in pregnancy
