The Fukushima Nuclear Disaster Flashcards
Why was the Fukushima Nuclear Disaster not prevented?
The adequate size of sea walls to block the enormous tsunami was not created by underestimation. This caused the tsunami to sink the Nuclear Power Plant causing the Nuclear Disaster.
What are fuel rods?
The container is made with fissile metal to be utilized in nuclear containers.
What are backup generators?
The generator provides energy temporarily to the specific object, which is the alternative energy source of a permanent generator.
What is the spent fuel pool?
The pool that is placed in a nuclear power plant to keep the radioactive wastes safely in the ground.
Which disaster caused the Fukushima Nuclear Disaster?
The Tohoku Earthquake or The Sendai Earthquake.
What is coming out of the top of these nuclear cooling towers
steam (water)
What are Iodine tablets?
Iodine tablets are a small solid medicine that is consumed to block the absorption of radioactive iodine and reduce the risk of cancer. Iodine tablets only provide protection against radioactive iodine and not against other radioactive substances.
What happens if water doesn’t cool down the fuel rods?
Without enough water, the fuel rods get so hot that they melt. If they begin to melt the nuclear reactor core and the steel containment vessel, and release radiation into the environment, nuclear meltdown occurs.
