All about Earthquakes and Tsunamis Flashcards
What is an Earthquake?
Earthquakes are the ground shaking caused by the push of tectonic plates each other.
What is a Tsunami?
Tsunamis are giant waves caused by earthquakes or volcanic eruptions under/near the sea.
What is liquefaction?
The happening that loosely packed, water-logged sediments at or near the ground surface lose their strength from strong ground shaking.
What is a magnitude?
The measurement of how earthquakes are strong seperated from 1-10.
How do we measure Earthquakes?
Seismometers. It allow us to detect and measure earthquakes by converting vibrations due to seismic waves into electrical signals.
What causes earthquakes?
Most earthquakes are caused by the movement of tectonic plates, which are large sections of the Earth’s crust that float on the semi-fluid mantle beneath them.
How do tsunamis form?
Tsunamis form when there is a sudden vertical displacement of a large volume of water. This can occur when tectonic plates move, causing the overlying water to be displaced.
Can tsunamis be predicted?
While it is challenging to predict the exact timing and size of a tsunami, scientists can monitor seismic activity and ocean buoys to provide early warnings and alerts for coastal areas at risk.
