The French Revolution (1789)
A
- The French Revolution posed a
fundamental challenge to Europe’s
existing political and social order. - The French Revolution resulted
from a combination of long-term
social and political causes, as well as Enlightenment ideas, exacerbated by short-term fiscal and economic crises. - The French Revolution became
the most momentous upheaval of the revolutionary age. - It replaced the “Old Regime” with a modern society.
- It profoundly influenced future revolutions.

- France was poor
- they spent too much money on the American Revolution and the Seven Years’ War
- people were starving
- nobility + Louis XVI + Marie-Antoinette were spending lavishly

A
- Louis fires his financial advisor Jacques Necker
- calls the Estates General

Rise of the Third Estate
A
- Third Estate meets up at Versailles as National Assembly but Louis locks the door to their normal meeting room
- go to an indoor tennis court and take the Tennis Court Oath that declares that they will continue meeting up until France has a constitution

A
- rioters stormed the Bastille in order to secure gunpowder and weapons

A
- women revolt against King and Queen by forcing them to move back to Paris from Versailles

King and Queen Escape (1791)
A
- king and queen run away and dress up as servants in order to escape
- they get caught
- Louis is sentenced to death by the guillotine in January 1793
- Marie is sentenced 9 months later

Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen

- ask for free communication
- followed ideas like Rousseau and other Enlightenment ones
- replace the old regime with a modern system
- wanted lands to be their own
- believed they should earn money from their working

French Revolution Turns Radical

- Legislative Assembly call war on Austria and Prussia
- Jacobins attacked royals and arrested the king
- Legislative Assembly was replaced with National Convention which got rid of the monarchy and instead established the French Republic

- many were sentenced to death by the guillotine
- France had a constitution which gave monarchy power
- Robespierre was at the lead of the killings
- he was executed by the guillotine by his own people, the Committee of Public Safety
