it was firmly controlled by the government
ran by aristocrats who cared little for trade but a lot for politics
how was this different to the Dutch threat?
the Dutch wanted a share of the market, the French wanted territory
what were reasons for French failure in India?
superiority of the British navy, able to bring soldiers and send supplies from Bengal
English EIC was a private company, the French counterpart was dependent on their government- didn’t have an active interest in the fortunes of their company
the British had Bombay, Calcutta, Madras, the French only had Pondicherry, lacked extra support if needed
the British had many capable men, French only had Dupleix
Plassey gave the English large resources of a rich area
