when and why was the Regulating Act established?
1773- loss of profit through corruption and illegal trading, it set to transfer power to a single governor-general at Calcutta
what was the Regulating Act?
governor-general, appointed by the government and controlled by a government appointed council in which he was one of five voting members
who was the first governor-general of India?
Warren Hastings
what did Hastings seek out to do?
wanted to improve education in Bengal and encourage company employees to find out more about Indian life
where was most of Hastings’ time spent?
on military affairs: wars against the Marathas in Bombay and Haider Ali resumed his attacks in Madras
however these attacks were unsuccessful, as governor-general over the three centres, Hastings was able to lay a unified defence policy which hadn’t been possible in the past
what was the British position in this period?
Hastings made Bengal relatively safe due to treaties with Indian princes, Mogul Empire was collapsing, military organisation, willingness to work together, Indian weakness
