1. Identify: the microorganism must be found in an abundance in all animals with the disease but should not be found in health organisms
2. Culture: The microorganism isolated from disease organims is grown in pure culture then accuratley described and recorded
3. Re-inoculate: The cultured microorganism should cause disease when introduced into a health organism
4. Re-isolate and Identify: the microorganism must be reisolated from the inoculated host (experimental host), cultured and identified as the same as the origional microorganism species.
